Relieved

When visiting Anglesey as described in my last post, I called into the public conveniences located near to the beach where we ate our picnic.

I was tickled to see this sign on the inside of the cubicle door.

I imagine there are many ways to experience relief within the enclosure of a toilet stall. However, having a sign to indicate the exit has to rank highly especially, as you can see, it was not only written in Welsh but helpfully translated into English.

I know our mental alacrity purportedly declines with age but I am still unsure as to which demographic the notice was intended for. Nevertheless I am grateful for the information imparted. Who knows, without it I might still be sitting there and what a way to spend retirement that would be!

Back in the 70's I used a public toilet which had a sign on the inside of the cubicle door saying "smile, you're on Candid Camera". That was a bit worrying!

Now I would find that disconcerting.

A few years ago I saw a picture of a road sign in Wales. The Welsh said something like "slow moving traffic ahead, keep right", but whoever sent it to the English translation department obviously wasn't paying attention because the English said "thank you for contacting the translation department. Please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible"! Tickled me to bits but then I'm weird. Obviously the sign on that door was just for men called Allan!

And now it gets really weird - trying to imagine why Allan was in the Ladies!

I am afraid most of the public "conveniences" I use in the States have some form of graffiti or a poor attempt at sketching. Of course, men's rooms have their own special environment.

I'd like to be able to say that I had no idea about the special environment to which you refer but having wandered into the gents in error, on several occasions to my great shame, I know what you mean!
