Bit of a Moan

I thought I'd acquired more patience with mindless bureaucracy in retirement. Imagining a surfeit of time, no deadlines, flexible living, you'd definitely think that patience would be added to the list. Certainly retirement started out very much in that vein. Perhaps I'm turning into the proverbial grumpy old woman or standards are just slipping, but sadly the last week or two have demonstrated that irritation rather than tolerance is scoring higher on my roll of reactions at present.

Starting with the clowns who were responsible for the remediation work to our property: they only forgot to tell Building Control that they'd finished. Let's hope the Inspector doesn't want our tiles and cupboards pulling out to inspect the completed floors underneath!

Then there's all the health and care workers I've been liaising with of late trying to resolve issues for my mother. Over promising and under delivering seems to be the hallmark of their services at present. I understand that everyone is busy but it would really be a lot more helpful if they could just be realistic and honest about what they can do, rather than failing to stick to anything like the timescales they set for themselves or simply forgetting to deliver altogether.

I could also mention the dumb app that I recently used to book a train ticket. It seems that once you have made your payment and it has been authorised by your cardholder, you are taken to a page to accept terms and conditions but it looks remarkably like the one you complete to initiate the transaction and are again asked to press a button marked "Pay." Talk about freaking out, it took me a couple of hours to fathom that one and to reassure myself that I wasn't paying for the same fare twice!

Or the website the Youngest asked me to order her birthday present from, where in reality almost everything was out of stock, but it didn't tell you.

Yep, stress must finally have caught up and turned me into a complaining, snivelling, whiner. Forget the yoga, living in the moment and breathwork, it's got to be time for a relaxing holiday!

And how about all the times the app you're using needs an update when you're in a hurry. I had this happen as I was trying to pay for a bus ticket - app needed updating (and the bus only runs once an hour). Then when I tried to pay for it, I had to re-enter all my bank details. And then of course my banking app needed updating, and all the while I can see the bus heading my way!!! Sometimes frustration and irritability can be justified!

Aargh - now that one would have completely finished me off!

It’s beyond frustrating when so called systems just mess you about. I do wonder what it would be like if I was still working and had to cope with all the hassle, I’d probably have given up and retired early.
